My First Font

Make your first font with Glyphs: In this fun introductory workshop, will draw a handful of letters, learn the basics of shaping with Bézier curves. We will export and test our font. In the last part of the workshop, we will expand our design into a variable font and make it animate in a web browser! No prior knowledge of type design required.

Getting Started: Self Determination

How are sovereignty and typography related? And what role does self-determination play? This workshop is a walk-through of what I didn't know that I wish I knew when I was getting started as an indigenous designer. Part workshop, part forum, all my relations.

Preserving languages in the digital environment

Take an in-depth look at the processes of supporting indigenous writing systems in digital media, from the encoding of characters and building of fonts to the development of keyboards and online resources for language communities. John Hudson explains the Unicode paradigm for text encoding and the choices facing type designers making fonts for indigenous languages. Neil Patel discusses the process of getting scripts supported in Unicode, from character encoding proposals to standardization of locale data such as alphabet ordering for particular languages, as well as development and distribution of keyboard software. Finally, Bridget Chase presents a case study of building online language resources: the work of the First Peoples’ Cultural Council’s FirstVoices project.
